How to extend your stay in Korea
Apply for an extension before your period of stay ends, never after. Learn how to apply online or in person, which documents you usually need, and what can cause problems.

Your visa status comes with a fixed period of stay. If you need to stay longer for the same purpose, you must apply for an extension of your period of stay (체류기간 연장). First, check the end date of your period of stay and write it down.
Two ways to apply
- Online: HiKorea e-application (전자민원). This is available for some statuses only. You upload your documents as files.
- In person: book a visit on HiKorea and go to the immigration office for your address. Bring the original documents.
Documents you usually need
- Application form
- Passport and ARC
- Fee (check the current fee on HiKorea)
- Proof of status: for students, a certificate of enrollment and a transcript or attendance record
- Proof of funds, if your status requires it (for example, a bank balance certificate)
- Proof of residence: lease contract, dorm confirmation, or accommodation confirmation
| Status | Often needed in addition | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| D-2 (degree student) | Certificate of enrollment, transcript | The period you get depends on your study period and record. |
| D-4 (Korean language trainee) | Certificate of enrollment, attendance record | Attendance is checked closely. |
| D-10 (job seeker) | Job-search activity report, proof of activities | The total time on D-10 is limited. Check HiKorea. |
| E-7 (professional) | Employment contract, employer documents | The period depends on your contract and employer. |
Step by step
- 1
Check your dates
Find your expiry date and the application window for your status on HiKorea. Put a reminder in your calendar.
- 2
Prepare documents
Use the lists above, then check the HiKorea document checklist for your exact case. Your school can issue enrollment and attendance certificates.
- 3
Apply
Submit an e-application, or book a visit and apply in person. Pay the fee.
- 4
Keep checking the result
Check the status of your application on HiKorea. If the office asks for more documents, send them quickly.
- 5
After approval
Check your new expiry date and save it. Start preparing early for the next time.
What if you are late? Staying after your period of stay ends without permission breaks the Immigration Act. You can get a fine, and it can lead to restrictions on future visa applications. If you have missed the date, contact the immigration office or call 1345 right away.
